My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

From my Windows XP SP3 machine, I downloaded the live image file for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I then burned a bootable CD. Then I went into the BIOS and set installation settings to (first) CD drive and (second) disabled.

However, when I boot I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor. After some time I might get some error messages. Even if I leave it for hours I get nothing.

FYI: I don't know how to go to the GRUB menu. Please make the answers easy since I am a young beginner.
